Richy joined CHBN Radio in June 2024 and presents African Vibe, a weekly programme celebrating African and Caribbean music, culture, and community. The show airs on Sundays from 5 pm to 7 pm, bringing together people from different backgrounds through music, conversations, cultural storytelling, and the sharing of experiences. I am passionate about using community radio to amplify underrepresented voices, promote inclusion, and help people feel connected, whether they are at home or far away from it.
Richy says "I volunteer because I believe that sometimes, the smallest act of kindness or a simple conversation can make a big difference in someone's life. Radio gives me a platform to connect people, celebrate different cultures, challenge stereotypes, and help others feel seen, heard, and valued.
"As someone who moved from Nigeria, a country in West Africa to Cornwall, I understand how important it is to find a sense of belonging in a new environment. Through African Vibe With RichyBongo, I hope to create that feeling of home away from home while introducing the wider community to the richness of African and Caribbean cultures.
"What I get out of volunteering is fulfilment, friendship, personal growth, and the joy of knowing that what I do may brighten someone's day. I may not be paid for my time, but the smiles, stories, connections, and positive feedback I receive are priceless. For me, volunteering is not just about giving my time; it is about making a difference, one voice, one song, and one connection at a time.
"I love music, broadcasting, storytelling, DJing, discovering new cultures, and bringing people together. I am also passionate about community development, cultural diversity, and creating opportunities for people whose voices are not always heard.
"Outside the studio, I enjoy organising events and finding creative ways to celebrate our shared humanity. My philosophy is simple: we may speak different languages, eat different foods, or practise different religions, but we can still share the same dance floor and the same dream of a better community.
"One funny thing about me is that I can start a conversation about African music and somehow end up discussing food, culture, life in Cornwall, and why everybody needs to dance a little more!
"My journey from Nigeria to Cornwall has taught me resilience, gratitude, and the importance of never giving up. I believe that every person has a story worth telling, and I am grateful to be part of a station that helps those stories reach the world.
"I'm still investigating why people say I make people laugh "you're funny" and I should've been a comedian. Gentle me!"
